Chado (茶道) is referred to as “Japanese Tea Ceremony” in English. It is a spiritual and aesthetic discipline for refinement of oneself, which is known as a "do", a “way” in Japanese. Therefore, the word “Chado” means "The Way of Tea."
Our tea master running these workshops is a member of Urasenke (裏千家) which is one of the main schools of Japanese tea ceremonies. Along with Omotesenke (表千家) and Mushakōjisenke (武者小路千家), it is one of the three lines of the Sen family (千家) descending from Sen no Rikyū (千利休), which together are known as the san-Senke (三千家) or the "three Sen houses/families".
Tomoko White became a tea instructor under Professor Akiko (Sobun) Yamada (Urasenke representative in Brisbane) in 2013 after 14 years of training. Tomoko has also earned the tea ceremony title “Soho”. She has been teaching others Japanese tea ceremony rituals since 2013 at her tea room, Hakuunan, on Thursdays and Saturdays, as well as actively performing tea demonstrations at schools and other events.
